I went about things backward. Most people interested in J-pop and J-Dorama started with manga or anime, then moved to those two, which in turn made them start studying Japanese. I started studying Japanese with no prior knowledge at all about it as part of my lower division major requirements (linguistics). I got into Japanese culture and history from there. I wrote a paper on the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, which tangentially led me to watching "Letters from Iwo Jima." I thought the acting was really good so I decided to look up what other stuff the actors had been in (thank you IMDB). "Ninomiya Kazunari is in a boyband?!" To YouTube to find out what this sounds like. I didn't really like it at first, but after listening to "Love So Sweet" a couple of times I was hooked. Arashi led me to other Johnny's bands and then I see something about MatsuJun being an actor and a bunch of hub-bub about Kimi wa Petto. I watched it and Gokusen: sucked in. I am now an addict with about 80gigs of J-Dorama on my hard drive. If you made it this far you get cookies!
